Russian Supreme Court to consider appeal in journalist Safronov's case on Aug 2

MOSCOW. June 29 (Interfax) - The Russian Supreme Court will consider an appeal on August 2 in a criminal case against journalist Ivan Safronov, who was sentenced to 22 years in a maximum-security penal colony for high treason, the court told Interfax.

"The court hearing is scheduled for 10 a.m. on August 2," the court said.

The trial is expected to take place behind closed doors, as Safronov's case files are classified.

The journalist's defense team insists on the unlawfulness of the court rulings pronounced in his case, including his sentence and appellate ruling, and seeks to overturn them.

The Moscow City Court sentenced Safronov to 22 years in a maximum-security penal colony with a fine of 500,000 rubles in September 2022. The First General-Jurisdiction Court of Appeals later upheld the sentence.

Safronov was found guilty on two counts of high treason. The journalist pleaded not guilty.

The journalist is currently serving his sentence in a penal colony in the Krasnoyarsk region.
