Putin receives report on attempted assassination of Crimean head - Peskov

MOSCOW. July 3 (Interfax) - Russian President Vladimir Putin is aware of the detention of a Russian citizen suspected of having been recruited by Ukrainian special services and plotting to assassinate head of Crimea Sergei Aksyonov, Russian presidential press secretary Dmitry Peskov said.

"Definitely, the president regularly receives reports, including on such high-profile cases concerning the head of such an important region as Crimea," Peskov told journalists in reply to a corresponding question on Monday.

"Aksyonov is a real fighter. Of course, he can't be intimidated by this. We wish him strong spirit and resilience," he said.

The Federal Security Service (FSB) earlier reported the detention of a Russian citizen who was recruited by Ukrainian special services and plotted an assassination attempt on Aksyonov.

The FSB said it detained a Russian citizen born in 1988, "who was recruited by officers of the Security Service of Ukraine and received reconnaissance and sabotage training, including experience in handling explosives, on Ukrainian territory."

"The agent of the foreign security service arrived in the Republic of Crimea in June 2023 and started preparations for the terror attack he was planning to perpetrate by blowing up a vehicle of the head of the republic. But the perpetrator failed to bring the plot to a conclusion, as he was detained while retrieving a bomb from a cache," the FSB said.

The investigative department opened a criminal case against the plotter on counts of attempted terror attack and the illegal acquisition, transfer, sale, possession, transportation, sending or carrying of explosives or explosive devices.

He was placed under arrest.
