Russian ship conducts artillery firing drills in Baltic Sea

MOSCOW. July 17 (Interfax) - The Merkury corvette has performed artillery firing during an exercise in the Baltic Sea, the Russian Baltic Sea Fleet's press service said in a statement on Monday.

"The Merkury corvette performed artillery firing at air targets, a towed shield and a simulated floating mine during a scheduled mission at sea," the statement said.

A 100mm A-190 artillery system and 30mm AK-630 artillery systems were used during the exercise, it said.

"All designated targets were successfully hit," it said.

The corvette also trained using electronic warfare, conducted a damage control exercise, and accomplished a number of anti-sabotage missions, it said.

The Merkury is the fifth corvette of Project 20380 built at the Severnaya Verf shipyard, which is a part of the United Shipbuilding Corporation. It is designed for patrolling near and far sea zones and fighting against surface ships, submarines and planes.

According to official information, the corvettes are armed with 100mm universal artillery systems, surface-to-air artillery systems, and anti-ship missiles. The ship's air group includes one Kamov Ka-27PL helicopter. Stealth technology was used in the construction of ships of this project.
