African countries interested in buying Russian S-400 air defense systems - FSMTC

ST. PETERSBURG. July 27 (Interfax) - African countries are interested in buying Russian S-400 Triumf air defense systems, the Russian Federal Service for Military-Technical Cooperation (FSMTC) told Interfax.

"The demand for this system is due to African countries' geographical situation, and also due to external threats. African countries are interested in buying it," the FSMTC said in connection with the Russia-Africa forum.

The S-400 air defense system is rated highly by foreign partners in various regions of the world, including in Africa, it said.

"Procuring the air defense systems irritates foes, because they are effective. That is why countries buying S-400 systems come under sanctions pressure from the United States and its allies," the FSMTC said.

The S-400 Triumf air defense system (developed and manufactured by Almaz-Antey) is designed to strike strategic and tactical aircraft, ballistic missiles, hypersonic targets and other air attack weapons when radio-electronic and other types of countermeasures are used.
