Russian Supreme Court turns down cassation appeal in journalist Safronov's case

MOSCOW. Aug 2 (Interfax) - The Russian Supreme Court has upheld the sentence on journalist Ivan Safronov, who will serve 22 years in a high-security penitentiary on counts of treason, as lawful, the court told Interfax.

"The cassation appeal has been dismissed," the court said on Wednesday.

The Supreme Court has therefore upheld the sentence and the appeal ruling. The journalist's defense said they were unlawful.
