Appeal court upholds sentence for Kazan school shooter

NIZHNY NOVGOROD. Aug 7 (Interfax) - The Fourth General Jurisdiction Appeal Court in Nizhny Novgorod upheld the life sentence imposed on Ilnaz Galyaviyev, convicted of an armed attack on a school in Kazan, on Monday, an Interfax correspondent reported.

"The sentence handed down by the Supreme Court of the Republic of Tatarstan is upheld, and the appeals are dismissed," the judge said.

Galyaviyev did not attend the hearing, and his lawyer was present by video link.

The lawyer said that the lower-tier court did not assess Galyaviyev's mental state at the time of the offense and during the trial. He also said that the intention to harm the school was not proven, and asked the court to repeal the sentence and to order a case review.

In turn, the prosecution asked the court to dismiss the appeal, while backing the claim of an aggrieved party for 1-million-ruble compensation.

The hearing was held without judicial investigation.

The Kazan school shooting occurred on May 11, 2021. Galyaviyev, 19, armed with a hunting gun and an explosive device he made, attacked teachers and students of School No. 175 he used to attend. Nine people, including seven minors, died.

Galyaviyev pleaded guilty as charged during the investigation and the trial.

On April 13, the Tatarstan Supreme Court found Galyaviyev guilty of murder, attempted murder, illegal procurement, transfer, sales, storage, transportation, sending and carrying of explosives or explosive devices, illegal production of explosives, and illegal production, remodeling or repairs of explosive devices, as well as premediated property destruction or damage. Galyaviyev was sentenced to life imprisonment.

The judge also imposed a fine of 200,000 rubles and ordered partial compensation of moral damage.

The lawyer appealed the sentence and asked for a case review. One of the aggrieved parties disagreed with the court awards and filed a claim.
