MOSCOW. Aug 7 (Interfax) - The Russian Federal Financial Monitoring Service (Rosfinmonitoring) has put sociologist Boris Kagarlitsky (designated as a foreign agent in Russia), who has been charged with vindicating terrorism, on the list of individuals and entities known to be involved in extremist or terrorist activities.
The new entry was added to Rosfinmonitoring's list on Monday.
The law requires banks to freeze assets of individuals and entities on said list and halt their servicing.
The Syktyvkar City Court ruled at the end of July to take Kagarlitsky into pretrial custody at least until September 24.
A preliminary investigation determined that, as the editor-in-chief of the IA Rabkor online media platform, Kagarlitsky posted a video open to the public that investigators believe is aimed at publicly justifying terrorism.
Sergei Yerokhov, Kagarlitsky's defense lawyer, has dismissed the charges as "absurd."
Kagarlitsky, a known Russian sociologist and political scientist, was placed on the foreign agent register in May 2022. The Institute for Globalization Studies and Social Movements that he founded has also been designated a foreign agent in Russia.
