NEW YORK, UN. Aug 7 (Interfax) - The United Nations supports any peaceful initiatives for settling the Ukraine crisis and achieving a peace agreement based on the UN Charter, Deputy Spokesman for the UN Secretary-General Farhan Haq said on Monday.
"The only thing we have to say is that we welcome all of the diplomatic initiatives towards dealing with this crisis and we want to keep pushing forward towards any form of a peace status based on the UN Charter, including on the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine," he told a briefing, responding to a request for comment on the recent talks in Jeddah on the Ukraine issue.
UN Under-Secretary-General for Political Affairs Rosemary DiCarlo joined those consultations via videoconference, which were held in Jeddah over the past weekend, he said.
Consultations on the issue of a peace settlement in Ukraine were held in Saudi Arabia on Saturday and Sunday. Representatives of some 30 countries attended them. A source in the EU institutions later said the EU did not rule out the possibility of consultations on Ukraine at the level of heads of state and government following the Jeddah meeting based on the results of the first day of negotiations.
Russian presidential press secretary Dmitry Peskov earlier said the Kremlin intends to follow the Ukraine talks in Saudi Arabia.
A similar meeting was held in Denmark's capital Copenhagen in late June. In particular, it was attended by representatives of Brazil, India, Turkey, and the South African Republic, as well as the United States, Ukraine and some Western countries.
