NATO may deploy additional military contingents, attack weapons in Finland - Shoigu

MOSCOW. Aug 9 (Interfax) - NATO may deploy attack weapons in Finland capable of striking critical infrastructure in northwestern Russia, Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu said.

"The deployment of additional military contingents and attack weapons of NATO capable of striking critical infrastructure in northwestern Russia at large depths is possible in Finland's territory," Shoigu said at a ministry board meeting on Wednesday.

Threats to Russia's military security have grown manifold in the western and northwestern strategic sectors, he said.

"The entry of Finland and, eventually, of Sweden into NATO is a serious destabilizing factor," Shoigu said.

Following Finland's accession to NATO, the land border between Russia and NATO member states has practically doubled in length, he said.
