Lithuania may close 2 checkpoints on border with Belarus from Aug 15

VILNIUS. Aug 9 (Interfax/BNS) - The Lithuanian government has drafted a resolution to close two out of six checkpoints on the border with Belarus from August 15, the BNS agency said on Wednesday.

There are plans to close the Sumskas and Tverecius checkpoints, BNS said. The draft suspends the checkpoints' operation "due to geopolitical circumstances, for the purpose of mitigating threats." The decision is based on possible threats coming from Wagner Group's relocation to Belarus.

The traffic will be diverted to Medininkai, which is the largest and best equipped checkpoint in Lithuania. It has an x-ray inspection system unlike the checkpoints in Sumskas and Tverecius.

State Border Guard Service Commander Rustam Liubayev said earlier that Lithuania might close down a large number of border checkpoints.
