Russian Strategic Missile Forces to display Yars launcher, Avangard system missile booster at Army 2023 Forum for first time - commander

MOSCOW. Aug 9 (Interfax) - The Russian Strategic Missile Forces will demonstrate the Yars ground-based mobile missile system launcher and the booster of the Avangard strategic system's intercontinental ballistic missile at the Army 2023 International Military-Technical Forum for the first time, the Forces' Commander Sergei Karakayev said.

"Along with the traditional launcher battery of the Topol ground-based mobile missile system, the autonomous launcher and launch-associated support vehicle of the Yars mobile missile system will be displayed for the first time [at the Army 2023 Forum]," Karakayev said in an interview with the Russian Defense Ministry's Krasnaya Zvezda newspaper.

"Apart from that, the booster of the intercontinental ballistic missile of the Avangard [strategic missile system], placed in a special transloader, will also be shown to the general public for the first time," he said.

Putting a Yars missile regiment on combat duty this year will conclude the Bologoye missile division's switch to the new weapon, Karakayev said.

The Bologoye division's shift to the Yars system began in 2016.

Yars is a strategic silo-based and road-mobile missile system. According to official information, it operates at a top range of 11,000 kilometers and carries a multiple reentry vehicle.

Avangard is a new Russian strategic missile system with a hypersonic glide vehicle flying at a top speed of Mach 27. It is designed by the Tactical Missile Corporation's NPO Mashinostroyenia in Reutov, Moscow region. The Russian Defense Ministry said in December 2019 that the first missile regiment equipped with Avangard systems had entered into service near Orenburg.

The Army 2023 International Military-Technical Forum will take place from August 14 to August 20 at the Patriot Congress and Exhibition Center, the Alabino training ground and the Kubinka airfield in the Moscow region.
