VILNIUS. Aug 11 (Interfax/BNS) - Lithuania will reinforce its border with Belarus due to the presence of Wagner Group members there, but the authorities believe that it is not necessary to elaborate on this information, the BNS news agency said, citing Lithuanian Prime Minister Ingrida Simonyte.
"The intelligence service has been working, our institutions have been working, and of course there are much larger forces within the defense system and in the law enforcement agencies. They also jointly hold exercises and undertake other measures," Simonyte said in an interview published on the Verslo zinios business news website on Friday.
"But I do not consider it necessary to present details, to provide lots of figures or something else, as our colleagues from the Polish government do sometimes," she said.
Lithuania plans to shut down two out of six crossing points on the border with Belarus. Shutting down more border crossings would require coordinating measures with neighboring countries, Simonyte said
"A proposal has now been submitted to close the crossing points that are used only by people, not by cargo. The government will discuss it in the near future," the prime minister said.
"As regards communication, there are crossing points for cargo traffic. [...] These decisions should be coordinated with the neighboring countries, because when one country makes such decisions, other countries immediately suffer from their consequences," she said.
Lithuania and Poland have taken measures to ramp up security following the relocation of some Wagner Group members to Belarus.
