MOSCOW. Aug 14 (Interfax) - Russia's Northern Fleet scrambled a MiG-29 fighter jet after detecting a Norwegian P-8A Poseidon plane over the Barents Sea heading toward the Russian border, the Russian Defense Ministry said.
"The fighter jet crew identified the airborne target as a P-8A Poseidon patrol plane of the Norwegian Air Force," the ministry said.
As the Russian aircraft approached it, the foreign military plane turned away from the Russian border, it said.
"The Russian fighter jet performed its flight in strict compliance with the international rules for the use of airspace, flying over neutral waters without crossing air routes or coming dangerously close to the aircraft of the foreign state," the ministry said.
