WASHINGTON. Aug 15 (Interfax) - U.S. State Secretary Antony Blinken has called on the U.S. Congress to approve additional funding for Ukraine, previously requested by U.S. President Joe Biden, as soon as possible.
"I urge Congress to pass this legislation on the supplemental funding right away," Blinken said at a briefing on Tuesday.
The aid provided by the U.S. and other allies helps Kiev maintain its sovereignty, he said.
Last week, Biden requested Congress grant an additional $24 billion in aid to Ukraine.
The last time the White House made a similar request to Congress, for over $37 billion, was last November. As a result, Congress approved the provision of $45 billion to Ukraine and U.S. allies in NATO. According to the Associated Press, there are currently growing divisions in Congress on whether providing further aid to Ukraine is expedient.
