CHISINAU. Aug 16 (Interfax) - Moldovan President Maia Sandu has called for further strengthening of the country's defense sector.
"We will continue to strengthen cooperation with the countries that help us bolster the defense and security sectors," Sandu said at a meeting with Moldovan ambassadors held annually by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and European Integration.
"It is crucial to strengthen the position of Moldova as a provider of security in the region and the continent so that everyone has trust in our country," Sandu said. "Obviously, we should insist on increasing the capacity of institutions tasked with ensuring internal order, as public security includes elements outside the system of defense," Sandu said.
This is a turning point for Moldova that will determine its future, Sandu said. Chisinau "is lucky that Romania supports Moldova. It is an important protector which backs our foreign policy," she said.
The soonest possible start to talks on Moldova's accession to the EU, economic recovery and promoting the interests of the community were among the primary objectives set by the president at the ambassadorial meeting.
