Tactical Missiles Corporation presents torpedo to counter underwater drones at Army 2023 forum

KUBINKA, Moscow region. Aug 16 (Interfax) - The Sea Underwater Weapon - Gidropribor company, part of Tactical Missiles Corporation, has presented a UMT versatile small-size torpedo at the Army 2023 forum, Boris Koptev, chief designer of the torpedo weapons section at the company, told Interfax on Wednesday.

"The 220mm UMT versatile small-size torpedo is designed to strike submarines of all types and unmanned underwater vehicles, which is very important now in the special military operation zone, as well as certain classes of surface ships," Koptev said.

Listing the torpedo's distinctive qualities, Koptev mentioned its "new weight and size characteristics and the possibility of using it from unmanned underwater vehicles, submarines, surface ships, including small ones, unmanned boats, that is, from virtually any types of carriers."

"The torpedo is equipped with a modern passive-active homing system and an open-architecture control system, which enables its modernization without changing its design. The torpedo is modular and can be upgraded for various purposes," Koptev said.

The company's specialists are currently developing self-propelled sonar countermeasures based on the torpedo's power-propulsion module, which should make it possible to create a versatile short-range system for submarines, he said.

"It would be capable of both striking submarines and unmanned underwater vehicles within a short range and serve as a sonar countermeasure for attacking torpedoes," he said.

The capacity of the torpedo's lithium ion battery could be increased to make its range longer. It could also be used as a robotic research system, Koptev said.

The torpedo's body is made of carbon fiber, and its stern part is manufactured using a 3D printer, which significantly reduces manufacturing time and enhances its quality and reliability, Koptev noted.

The UMT torpedo was presented at the Army forum for the first time, he said.

According to the company's information, the torpedo is from 2,000 to 2,300 mm long depending on its specifications, its diameter is 300 mm, and it weighs no more than 140 kilos. It can carry explosives equivalent to up to 35 kilos of TNT, its range is from five to seven kilometers, and operating depth up to 450 meters. It can move at a regulated speed of 27 knots.
