Kyrgyz, Kazakh special forces conducting joint exercise

BISHKEK. Aug 17 (Interfax) - Units of Kyrgyz and Kazakh special forces are conducting the Erdik (Courage) joint training exercise to practice responding to terrorist threats in border regions, the Kyrgyz Defense Ministry's press service said on Thursday.

"The Erdik special joint tactical exercise involving special units of Kyrgyzstan's and Kazakhstan's Armed Forces was inaugurated at military garrison No. 20636 on August 17," it said.

The exercise is aimed at developing a common response mechanism to terrorist threats in border areas and assessing operational capabilities of units performing combat duties, it said.

Over 150 troops and about 30 items of special equipment and aircraft from both countries are taking part in the exercise.

The exercise will continue until August 23 and include practical training, it said.
