Ukrainian woman detained in Russia's Rostov region for spying

ROSTOV-ON-DON. Aug 21 (Interfax) - Officers of the Russian Federal Security Service's (FSB) branch for the Rostov region detained a Ukrainian woman in the Rostov region on suspicion of gathering information about the location of Russian military units in order to subsequently pass it to the Ukrainian Armed Forces, the press service for the FSB's local branch said.

"Investigators have established that, after entering the territory of the Russian Federation, the Ukrainian woman got in touch with a female officer of the Ukrainian Security Service over the phone and promised her to provide information about the location of [Russian] military units and routes used by hardware and personnel of the Russian army. During her subsequent visits to the Rostov region, the woman recorded messages on her phone containing information about the places where air defense systems are deployed and about the movement of military vehicles and tanks," the press service said.

The suspect has already been detained.

"The information collected by her could have been used by the command of the Ukrainian Armed Forces to deliver strikes on this site, which would have resulted in losses among Russian Armed Forces personnel and hardware," it said.

The devices used by the woman to contact representatives of Ukrainian special services have been seized from her. A criminal case has been opened on espionage charges.
