BAKU/YEREVAN. Aug 22 (Interfax) - The Azerbaijani Defense Ministry has reported an Armenian attack on its positions near the Azerbaijani-Armenian border.
"Units of the Armenian Armed Forces stationed near Birali in the Davali region and Saybali in the Garakilsa region fired small arms of various calibers at Azerbaijani army positions in the vicinity of Garaaghaj in the Sadarak region of the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic and Minkend in the Lachin region between 10:50 p.m. on August 21 and 2:05 a.m. on August 22," the ministry said.
Additionally, illegal Armenian armed units operating in the territory of Azerbaijan (the Karabakh region), where the Russian peacekeeping contingent is temporarily stationed, tried to build permanent fortifications in front of Azerbaijani army positions in the direction of the Tartar, Khojaly and Aghdam regions between 6:15 a.m. and 7:20 a.m. on August 22, it said.
"Urgent measures taken by Azerbaijani army units put the work to a stop," the ministry said.
Yerevan denied the report.
"The statement by the Azerbaijani Defense Ministry, according to which units of the Armenian Armed Forces fired upon Azerbaijani positions in the southwestern and southeastern parts of the border between 10:50 p.m. on August 21 and 2:05 a.m. on August 22, is untrue," the Armenian Defense Ministry said.
