DPR resident sentenced to 5.5 years in penitentiary for plotting espionage

ROSTOV-ON-DON. Aug 22 (Interfax) - The Southern District Military Court in Rostov-on-Don has found Sergei Yuryev, a resident of the Donetsk People's Republic (DPR), guilty of publicly excusing terrorism and plotting espionage, the court's press service said on Tuesday.

"A sentence has been pronounced in the criminal case of Yuryev. [...] The defendant was found guilty and sentenced to five years and six months in a high-security penitentiary," the press service said.

The court found that Yuryev, who lived in the DPR between 2015 and 2019, repeatedly published information about the location and redeployments of DPR troops and hardware on his webpage. He gathered the information from local residents and surfing the Internet.

"In August 2018, Yuryev posted a text and a comment on a post by another Internet user, which carried signs of calls for terrorism and excusing terrorist activity," the press service said.

He was charged with public calls for terrorism, public excuse of terrorism or terrorist propaganda, and plotting of espionage.
