MOSCOW. Aug 29 (Interfax) - A resident of Russia's Kaluga region has been detained on suspicion of planning to take part in hostilities on the side of Ukraine and of plotting a terrorist attack in the region, the Russian Federal Security Service (FSB) said.
"The Federal Security Service of the Russian Federation thwarted the unlawful activities of a Russian citizen, a resident of the Kaluga region, who, acting on his own initiative, got in touch with and maintained contacts with representatives of a Ukrainian paramilitary formation and, acting on their orders, intended to carry out a terrorist attack," the FSB press center said.
The man also planned to relocate to Ukraine to fight on the side of the Ukrainian Armed Forces within the Azov terrorist organization, banned in Russia, it said.
"The suspect, acting on militants' orders, also carried out preparations for staging a terrorist attack on a facility of Kaluga's critical infrastructure," the press center said.
Components and parts of an improvised explosive device were seized from a cache set up by the suspect, while instructions on how to make an improvised explosive device and "correspondence with a Ukrainian coordinator confirming the criminal intentions of the detained man" were found in his phone.
The investigative department of the FSB's branch for the Kaluga region has opened a criminal case on counts of high treason by taking the enemy's side, preparations to perpetrate an act of terrorism, participation in the activities of a terrorist organization, and receiving training for the purpose of engaging in terrorist activities.
