TBILISI. Sept 6 (Interfax) - Georgian President Salome Zourabichvili has said on social media that she has met with French President Emmanuel Macron in Paris.
"I am happy that there was a very fruitful meeting with the French president regarding granting Georgia candidate status for EU membership," Zourabichvili said on social media on Wednesday.
Last week, Zourabichvili also met with German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier and European Council President Charles Michel.
Zourabichvili's visit to European capitals is taking place amid the launch of impeachment proceedings against her in parliament. The ruling Georgian Dream party launched the procedure accusing Zourabichvili of breaching the country's constitution by failing to coordinate her visits to Europe with the government, which is in charge of foreign and domestic policy.
The party intends to file a lawsuit against the president for violating the country's constitution with the Georgian Constitutional Court next week. If the lawsuit is granted, impeachment will be put to a vote in parliament.
The ruling party's head Irakli Kobakhidze told reporters earlier that the parliament was unlikely to support president's impeachment. The parliamentary majority does not have sufficient votes in the legislature, and opposition MPs will block the decision, he said.
The rift between the Georgian government and the president started after the hostilities in Ukraine broke out. Zourabichvili, who was elected president with the support of Georgian Dream, criticized the government for refusing to impose unilateral sanctions on Russia. She also opposed the resumption of flights between Moscow and Tbilisi, proposing to introduce visas for Russian citizens.
Georgian government members accuse the president of backing the opposition.
