Medvedev objects to restrictions in retaliation for EU ban on Russians importing certain goods

MOSCOW. Sept 11 (Interfax) - There is no need for restrictions to retaliate against the European Union's ban on Russian citizens importing certain goods into the EU, Russian Security Council Deputy Chairman Dmitry Medvedev has said.

"What should we do about this? [We] definitely [should] not impose retaliatory restrictions on EU citizens," Medvedev said on Telegram.

Foreigners who visit Russia "usually love and appreciate Russia. It would be better to simply suspend diplomatic relations with the EU and bring diplomatic personnel back to our country," he said.

"Embassies are evacuated before specific events," Medvedev added.

On Sunday, the European Commission explained the regulations which prohibit Russian citizens from importing certain goods from Russia into the European Union. The commentary said that the ban would apply to transport and certain kinds of personal belongings of Russian citizens, such as cars, electronic goods, alcoholic beverages, tobacco, cosmetics, personal hygiene products, precious metal jewelry, and many other items.

The regulations prohibit imports of such goods from Russia. The latest commentary adds goods for personal use to the imports category.
