ASTANA. Sept 12 (Interfax) - An extraordinary session of the Council of Foreign Ministers of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) will be held on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly session in New York on September 20, Kazakh Foreign Ministry spokesman Aibek Smadiyarov said.
"An extraordinary session of the Council of Foreign Ministers of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization member states will be held in New York on September 20 and chaired by Kazakh Foreign Minister Murat Nurtleu [...]. The event is being held to exchange views on the implementation of the president's initiative to reform the operation of SCO mechanisms and bodies," Smadiyarov said at a press briefing in Astana on Tuesday.
The agenda also includes discussions on the SCO's development prospects, improving its potential, as well as enhancing the SCO's cooperation with the UN in the light of pressing international and regional issues, he added.
Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev said at the SCO summit in Astana in July that the SCO needed to adopt a new development strategy to expand its agenda in the most promising areas of cooperation.
