Baltic countries not ready to close border with Belarus - Polish deputy minister

MINSK. Sept 12 (Interfax) - The Baltic countries are not ready for now to support Poland's decision to fully close the border with Belarus, Polish Deputy Minister of the Interior and Administration Maciej Wasik told Polish Radio on Tuesday.

"We have persuaded the Baltic countries to come to an agreement that in the event of a serious incident, if [Belarusian President Alexander] Lukashenko does not back down, we will isolate Belarus together. We will close all border crossings if a serious incident occurs on the border - regardless of whether it will be on the Polish border, the Lithuanian border or the Latvian border. The countries will act jointly," Wasik said.

Poland is already prepared for such a step, but "it looks like that for the Baltic countries trade in goods provides most of their income," he said.

"For us, the border with Belarus is a small opening, for Belarus it is a window, but for Lithuania and Latvia is a huge window. Nevertheless, we managed to persuade our partners to act jointly," Wasik said.
