Russian citizen given 12.5 years in prison over smuggling military goods on U.S. security services' orders

MOSCOW. Sept 15 (Interfax) - The Tver Region Court has sentenced Russian citizen Sergei Kabanov to 12 years and six months in a high-security penitentiary after convicting him of committing high treason to the benefit of the United States.

"The Tver Region Court convicted Russian citizen Sergei Kabanov of high treason for arranging a channel for smuggling Russian military-purpose products to the U.S. on orders from American security services," the Russian Federal Security Service's press center said on Friday.

Kabanov was sentenced to 12 years and six months in a high-security penal colony.

Investigators established that "Kabanov shipped items used in missile systems of the Russian Armed Forces to the U.S. firm Victory Procurement Services (Huntsville, Alabama) controlled by the U.S. Department of Defense," the press center said.

The military products were smuggled to the U.S. via Latvia, it said.

"The channel used to hand over components of Russian air defense missile systems and radar weapons to the adversary was eliminated," it said.

The arrest of Kabanov by Moscow's Lefortovo District Court was first reported in April 2021. The charges brought in the case were not disclosed at the time.
