S. Korea considers sanctions against Russia in event of Russia-N. Korea arms deals - media

HONG KONG. Sept 15 (Interfax) - South Korea is considering taking a variety of measures, including sanctions against Russia, if Russia and North Korea strike arms deals, the South Korean news agency Yonhap quoted South Korean Foreign Minister Park Jin as saying.

"We are reviewing all possible measures," Park said in response to a journalist's question as to whether Seoul was exploring the possibility of sanctions against both North Korea and Russia.

"North Korea reaching any agreement related to arms trade with Russia through their summit would be an extremely serious threat to security and peace on the Korean Peninsula," Park said.

Military cooperation between North Korea and Russia, including trade in arms, would breach UN Security Council resolutions regarding Pyongyang, he said.

"The government is issuing a stern warning and urging against such activities from happening," Park said.

South Korean Prime Minister Han Duck-soo has also expressed concern about possible military cooperation between North Korea and Russia.

"We are witnessing relations between Russia and North Korea drawing closer," Han said, adding that the news of their possible military cooperation caused concern.
