Russian Emergency Situations Ministry to send humanitarian aid to flood-stricken Libya

MOSCOW. Sept 15 (Interfax) - The Russian Emergency Situations Ministry will send humanitarian aid to flood-stricken Libya, the ministry's press service said on Friday.

"An Ilyushin Il-76 plane has departed from Zhukovsky in the Moscow region on the orders of Russian President Vladimir Putin, the Russian government and Emergency Situations Minister Alexander Kurenkov to deliver humanitarian aid to Libya," the press service said.

Russian rescuer workers will provide essential goods such as tents, blankets, mobile power generators and lighting systems to the flood victims, it said.

"Libya will also be provided with rescue equipment to be used in the emergency zone," it said.

Floods hit Libya in the early hours of Monday. Derna was struck the hardest, with 6,000 people unaccounted for, the authorities said. Whole areas were washed away. The death toll from the Libyan floods is close to 11,300.

Libyan Prime Minister Abdul Hamid Dbeibah announced three days of national mourning.
