India proposes building non-nuclear icebreakers to Russia, takes interest in northern navigation at Eastern Economic Forum - minister

VLADIVOSTOK. Sept 15 (Interfax) - Russia is studying the proposals made by India at the Eastern Economic Forum regarding cooperation in northern navigation and the construction of non-nuclear icebreakers, Russian Minister for Far East and Arctic Development Alexei Chekunov told reporters on Friday.

"I would note the growing interest of India. It is our large and important partner, and our trade turnover has been growing rapidly. The Indian minister of ports and shipping has visited Russia for the first time and begun to get acquainted with the country in Vladivostok. They have presented a feasibility study for [sea] shipping, and have put forward proposals concerning northern navigation, joint personnel training and even construction of non-nuclear icebreakers at Indian shipyards. We are studying their proposals," Chekunov said.

He also noted that the Indian delegation had negotiated container transportation with FESCO.

It was reported earlier that FESCO was planning to open a cargo transportation hub in India.
