Russia suggests opening consulate general in Syunik region, Yerevan agrees - Armenian FM

YEREVAN. Oct 25 (Interfax) - Yerevan has given its consent to Moscow opening a consulate general in the Syunik region, which borders Azerbaijan in the east and Iran in the south.

"Russia has suggested to Armenia opening a consulate general in the Syunik region. Considering all nuances, Armenia gave a positive resolution and gave its consent," Armenian Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan said at a government Q&A session in parliament on Wednesday.

He could not say at what stage of work Russia was at now to open a consulate general in Syunik.

"It's hard for me to say. But relevant agencies are working together," Mirzoyan said.

Iran has opened a consulate general in the Syunik region, and France and some other countries, with which discussions are being held, have the same plans, he said.

"International presence in a certain region will intensify this region's economy. This step also has a political message," Mirzoyan said.
