MOSCOW. Oct 25 (Interfax) - The Russian Defense Ministry on Wednesday released footage of launches of a Yars intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) from the Plesetsk Cosmodrome and a Sineva ICBM from the Tula nuclear-powered submarine during a nuclear deterrence forces exercise.
The ministry also released footage of a Tupolev Tu-95MS strategic missile-carrying aircraft's takeoff also involved in the strategic forces exercise.
On Wednesday, Russian troops conducted an exercise to practice delivering a mass nuclear strike in retaliation to an enemy's nuclear attack.
"Comrade Supreme Commander-in Chief, in accordance with the training plan of the Russian Federation Armed Forces, an exercise on control of the Russian Federation Armed Forces is being held under your direction in order to work out the mission of delivering a massive nuclear strike by the strategic offensive forces in retaliation to an adversary's nuclear strike," Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu said in his report to President Vladimir Putin. The Rossiya-24 (VGTRK) television channel broadcast footage of the event.
Russian Armed Forces General Staff Chief Valery Gerasimov said a Yars ICBM system of the Russian Strategic Missile Forces, the Tula strategic nuclear-powered submarine of the Northern Fleet, and two Tu-95MS missile-carrying aircraft were involved in the exercise.
