NEW YORK, UN. Oct 26 (Interfax) - Russia and China, both permanent UN Security Council members, have vetoed a U.S.-sponsored draft resolution on the conflict between Israel and the Hamas group.
Ten UN Security Council members backed the draft resolution, three voted against, and two abstained.
The vote was broadcast live on the UN website.
The U.S.-drafted resolution condemned Hamas actions but supported, in particular, a humanitarian pause to enable deliveries of food, fuel, water and other essential supplies to the civilian population in the Gaza Strip.
The U.S. draft outlines practical steps that need to be taken to settle the situation, U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken said on Tuesday.
On October 7, the Hamas radical group based in Gaza launched an attack on southern Israel. The Israeli Defense Forces began a military operation against Hamas in retaliation. on October 19, Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant said that Israeli forces may enter Gaza in the near future.
