Russian helicopters destroy mock enemy in Tajikistan's mountains

YEKATERINBURG. Nov 1 (Interfax) - Helicopters from the 201st Russian military base in Tajikistan have trained in the highlands, the Russian Central Military District's press service said.

"The helicopters performed nap-of-the-earth flights and simulated launches of S-8 unguided air-to-surface missiles at concentrations of mock enemy hardware and troops at the Lyaur highland range," the press service said.

The exercise involved Mil Mi-8 military transport helicopters and Mi-24 attack helicopters. The crews performed aerial reconnaissance and practiced piloting through gorges and around mountaintops and cliffs, and landing up to 3,000 meters above sea level, the press service said.

Ground-based units maintained radio contact, provided radar control of the flight routes, prepared the runway and fueled the aircraft, it said.
