Slovakia refuses to give Kiev new military aid package worth 40 mln euros

PRAGUE. Nov 8 (Interfax) - Slovakia's new government on Wednesday decided to block the allocation of a new military assistance package to Ukraine worth over 40 million euros.

"The former leadership of the Slovak Defense Ministry prepared a proposal to provide Ukraine with the 14th package of military assistance worth over 40 million euros, but the new government of Robert Fico did not authorize the provision of this assistance on Wednesday," Slovak television reported.

The total amount of Slovakia's assistance to Ukraine until now exceeds 670 million euros, the TV report said.

The new government of Slovakia, led by Robert Fico, leader of the Direction - Social Democracy party, took office in late October. Fico is known for his opposition to further weapons supply to Ukraine. He has previously stated the Western sanctions against Russian were inefficient and promised to veto the statement on Ukraine's accession to NATO. He has also spoken out against Ukraine's accession to the European Union.
