MOSCOW. Nov 14 (Interfax) - There are multiple advocates of cooperation with Russia in Moldova, as evidenced in particular by the results of the recent local elections in that country, and Moscow is aware of that, Russian presidential press secretary Dmitry Peskov said, commenting on Moldovan President Maia Sandu's remark that Moldova has no common subjects to discuss with Russia and that Russia does not respect Moldovan citizens.
"The results of those municipal elections [in Moldova] show just the opposite - that people are attracted more to political forces wishing the Moldovan leadership would build more balanced international relations rather than pursue a purposeful line towards phasing out any dialogue with Russia. There are many supporters of developing cooperation with our country in Moldova, and we know about that. The results of the latest municipal elections have shown this quite clearly, among other things," Peskov told journalists on Tuesday.
"At the very least, Ms. Sandu disregards the outcomes of the elections that have just been held, I mean the municipal elections, where it wasn't in fact her party that won," Peskov said. He was commenting on Moldovan President Maia Sandu's remark that Moldova has no common subjects to discuss with Russia and that Russia does not respect Moldovan citizens.
Moldova held local elections for city mayors and heads of local councils earlier in November, in which the ruling Party of Action and Solidarity (PAS) won in three of the 36 cities. PAS also garnered more votes than other parties did in elections to the councils of 19 out of the 32 districts, but did not win an absolute majority of votes in any of them. A PAS candidate in the mayoral elections in Chisinau came in second with slightly more than 28% of the vote.
