Russian Emergency Situations Ministry: 12 Russians pass through Rafah checkpoint on Thurs, heading to Cairo

MOSCOW. Nov 16 (Interfax) - Twelve Russian citizens crossed the Rafah checkpoint on Egypt's border with the Gaza Strip on Thursday, the Russian Emergency Situations Ministry's press service said.

"Today, 12 Russian citizens and their family members passed through the Rafah checkpoint. They are currently traveling by buses to Cairo, where an operational headquarters has been deployed," the statement said.

On November 12, the Russian Emergency Situations Ministry jointly with Russian diplomats organized efforts to evacuate Russian citizens from the Gaza Strip.

In total, almost 310 Russian citizens have crossed the Rafah checkpoint on the Egyptian border with the Gaza Strip over the past five days.

On October 7, the Hamas radical group based in Gaza attacked Israel. More than 1,400 people were killed in the attack, and over 200 were taken hostage. The Israel Defense Forces launched a military operation against Hamas in retaliation. The death toll from Israeli strikes in the Gaza Strip, according to Palestinian reports, has exceeded 11,000 people.
