MOSCOW. Nov 29 (Interfax) - Russian President Vladimir Putin may meet with Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan at an informal summit of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) in St. Petersburg in late December, although such a meeting may also take place earlier, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said.
"If Mr. Pashinyan goes there, and he is expected, as everyone else, that will be a perfect opportunity to talk," Peskov said in response to a question on whether the two leaders might communicate.
A contact between the two leaders is possible before [the summit], "if the heads of state deem it necessary to do so earlier, it would be there decision," he said.
Peskov said he meant the traditional New Year CIS summit in St. Petersburg. "The thing is that they [the meetings] will not be just festive, these are working events with a working agenda," he said.
Media outlets reported earlier that Pashinyan planned to speak with Putin by phone. Reporters asked Peskov whether the call was on Putin's schedule. "Not currently," he replied.
On Tuesday, Armenian Parliament Speaker Alen Simonyan said Armenia should take part in the Eurasian Economic Union summit in St. Petersburg in December, as it was to take over the EAEU presidency. No decision has been made on Pashinyan's participation in the meeting, he said.
The Supreme Eurasian Economic Council's meeting and an informal CIS summit will be held in St. Petersburg at the end of December.
