YEKATERINBURG. Nov 29 (Interfax) - Personnel of the Russian military base stationed in Kyrgyzstan practiced repelling a mock enemy attack on military facilities during an exercise, the Russian Central Military District's press service said on Wednesday.
"Under the scenario of the drills, an on-duty unit received an alert about an approaching 'illegal armed formation', seeking to seize military facilities. A counterterrorism group, backed by BTR-82A [armored personnel carriers], set off to the site of the incident. Upon arrival, the servicemen assessed the situation, deciding to encircle the 'enemy' and eliminate it completely," the press service said.
Sappers, for their part, examined the territory and the mock enemy vehicle, it said.
"The improvised explosive devices found in the vehicle were destroyed," the press service said.
Around 60 servicemen and 20 pieces of special and military hardware participated in the exercise, which took place in a true-to-life environment.
The joint Russian military base is located in the Chuy region of Kyrgyzstan. The base is part of the collective rapid reaction forces and is involved in ensuring the security of the Collective Security Treaty Organization's airspace. The base has Sukhoi Su-25 attack aircraft and Mil Mi-8MTV5-1 modernized helicopters.
