Russian military holds exercise with S-300 air defense system in Tajikistan

YEKATERINBURG. Nov 29 (Interfax) - The troops of the 201st Russian military base stationed in Tajikistan held an exercise with an S-300 long-range air defense system and conducted mock missile launches, the Central Military District's press service said on Wednesday.

"An air defense [forces] exercise was held at the Russian military base in Tajikistan. A division of S-300 air defense missile systems detected mock enemy high-speed targets, conducted a takeover, shadowing and electronic launches of anti-aircraft guided missiles at air targets simulating modern air attack weapons of the mock enemy from various targets and at various altitudes," the press service said.

The protection and defense units of the 201st base also practiced rebuffing attacks by mock sabotage and reconnaissance groups on combat positions, it said.

The 201st military base in Tajikistan is Russia's largest military facility abroad. The base is located in the cities of Dushanbe and Bokhtar and consists of motorized infantry, tank, artillery, reconnaissance, air defense, radiation, chemical and biological protection, and signals units.

At the end of 2019, the Russian military strengthened the 201st base with long-range air defense systems. A battalion of S-300PS air defense missile systems, a product of Almaz-Antey, was put on combat duty.
