Moscow court fines Google 800,000 rubles for violating 'self-control' law

MOSCOW. Dec 6 (Interfax) - Moscow's Tagansky District Court has ordered Google to pay an administrative fine of 800,000 rubles for violating the 'self-control' law, the court told Interfax.

"Google LLC has been penalized with an administrative fine of 800,000 rubles," the court said on Wednesday.

The internet company has been found guilty of the social media owner's non-compliance with the requirement to monitor the social network and take measures to restrict access to certain information on it.

The 'self-control' law, or Article 10.6 of the law on information, information technologies and protection of information, took effect on February 1, 2021, and imposed certain duties on social networks. For instance, they must monitor and independently remove prohibited information from their platforms, have a legal form for user applications, and annually publish reports on the work done in this area.

Amendments to the Russian Code of Administrative Offenses, which holds social networks responsible for failing to comply with the 'self-control' law, took effect on September 1, 2023.
