Free trade agreement between EAEU, Iran to be signed soon - document (Part 2)

MOSCOW. Dec 7 (Interfax) - Negotiations on a free trade agreement between the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU) and Iran have been completed, and the document will be signed in the near future, according to materials prepared for a meeting between the Russian and Iranian presidents in Moscow.

"The negotiations have been completed successfully, and the document will be signed in the near future," the materials say.

At present, the EAEU and Iran are applying preferential trade procedures based on a provisional agreement dated May 17, 2018, they say.

Moscow and Iran are continuing to effectively operate Unit 1 and build Units 2 and 3 of the Bushehr Nuclear Power Plant, they say.

Russia and Iran are also cooperating on financing the construction of the Rasht-Astara railroad in Iran to develop shipments via the North-South international transport corridor. The document envisions Russia's contribution to financing the railroad's construction, which should provide for "seamless logistics from Russia to southern Iranian ports within the North-South international transport corridor."

Speaking earlier on Thursday, Russian President Vladimir Putin said he planned to discuss the North-South international transport corridor with his Iranian counterpart Ebrahim Raisi.
