Ukraine's EU accession will undermine union's entire system - Peskov

MOSCOW. Dec 22 (Interfax) - The possible intention of the European Union to admit Ukraine together with the new Russian regions will be viewed as a territorial claim and will have consequences, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said.

"This is a matter of Russian regions, an integral part of the Russian Federation, with all the consequences for those who might claim them," Peskov said at a press briefing on Friday.

Peskov was asked to comment on a statement by Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban, who wondered what borders the EU planned to admit Ukraine with in view of the existence of the new Russian regions.

The admission of new members to the European Union is being discussed, Peskov said.

"We have repeatedly borne witness to this discussion, because although they say a lot, the admission of such a country as Ukraine, irrespective of its territorial problems, the admission of such a country to the EU would simply undermine the entire system of the European Union. Sober-minded people realize that this is a burden the EU is unable to bear," Peskov said.

"Being aware of how serious the problem is, the Europeans camouflage it with a fair amount of discussion," he said.
