Yerevan to preclude any attempts to politicize Eurasian integration during its EAEU presidency - Pashinyan

YEREVAN. Dec 25 (Interfax) - The Eurasian Economic Union and its economic principles should not serve any political ambitions, Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan said.

"It is symbolic that the Armenian presidency coincides with the 10th anniversary of the signing of the EAEU treaty, which has at its foundation the fundamental concept that the EAEU is an economic association that should not have any political, let alone geopolitical, agenda. We continue to perceive it in exactly this way and to develop interaction within the framework of our economic cooperation in this context, aiming to stop any attempts to politicize Eurasian integration," Pashinyan said at a meeting of the Supreme Eurasian Economic Council in St. Petersburg.

"The EAEU and its economic principles should not correlate with political ambitions," he said.

Fundamental trade freedoms cannot and should not be limited for political reasons, Pashinyan said.

"This will surely lead to an erosion of the association's fundamental principles. In this context, the Armenian side finds it important to sign a declaration [regarding] the development of economic processes further down the road until 2030 and for the period until 2045, the basis of which is formed by the conceptual and top-priority areas of the EAEU's medium-term and long-term development," he said.

He also praised the signing of a free trade agreement with Iran.

"The signing of a full-format agreement helps consolidate trade, economic, logistics and transport ties with Iran and will make it possible to create a firm contractual basis for joint plans," Pashinyan said.
