Russia operating group of 229 satellites - Roscosmos

MOSCOW. Dec 26 (Interfax) - Russia is operating a group of 229 satellites, Roscosmos said on Tuesday.

"As of December 1, 2023, the national space group consisted of 229 satellites, including 163 with a socioeconomic purpose," the state corporation said.

Russia ranks fourth in the world by the number of satellites in orbit, with a significant gap behind the leaders - the United States, China and the United Kingdom, it said.

"Russia's share in the global space group is only 2.5% and continues to decrease," Roscosmos said.

"Russia needs to accelerate the enlargement of its space group and improve consumer characteristics by changing the generation of satellites," Roscosmos head Yury Borisov said.

"The development of manufacturing capacities of the rocket and space industry, the introduction of conveyer production, and the involvement of private companies in satellite production will help enlarge the Russian space group 15 times by 2036," the corporation quoted Borisov as saying at a strategic session.
