Kremlin analyzed possible response in case of West's seizure of frozen Russian assets - Peskov (Part 2)

MOSCOW. Dec 29 (Interfax) - The Kremlin analyzed a possible response in case of frozen Russian assets' seizure in advance, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said.

"Of course, we have analyzed a possible response in advance. We will do everything so that it suits our interests best," Peskov told reporters on Friday.

He thus commented on reports that the G7 leaders would discuss the U.S. legal theory, which might allow the West to seize the frozen Russian assets, at their summit in February.

Reporters asked Peskov whether Russia had a list of assets it could seize in response.

"Of course, it does," Peskov replied.

The Kremlin understood "the absolute unpredictability of our counterparties and their inclination to break international and other laws, including their own," Peskov said. "Their self-destruction tendency" is also obvious, he said.

"I mean the destruction of the existent economic system, the undermining of confidence in chief postulates of the global economic system, the reserve currency, and the principle of inviolability of property," Peskov said.

"No theory [authorizing the seizure] can be legal, all it can be is pseudo-legal. It will deal a considerable blow to the main parameters of the global economy. It will undermine confidence of other states," Peskov said.

"Such actions are fraught with very serious consequences. When the Europeans and the Americans resorted to the unprecedented sanctions against us, they gave absolutely no thought to the boomerang effect. It is now obvious, and many are wondering whether they have done right," he said.

"Such actions as the seizure and theft of our assets will have even more harmful consequences," Peskov said.
