VORONEZH. Jan 11 (Interfax) - The Kursk Regional Court has convicted a local resident of plotting treason and attempting to illegally cross the Russian border, the joint press service for the regional judiciary said on Thursday.
The defendant was sentenced to six years in a high-security penitentiary to be followed by one-year probation, the press service said.
The court found that after the special military operation began in February 2022, the 21-year-old man decided to go to Ukraine and take part in the hostilities on the Ukrainian side. He started learning Ukrainian and submitted personal data online to join a Ukrainian paramilitary detachment.
Following this, he traveled to border areas of the Kursk region and tried to cross over the border, but was detained by police.
The defendant pleaded guilty and repented, the press service said.
The court found him guilty of plotting treason and attempting to illegally cross the Russian state border.
