Tiraspol says militants being trained in Moldova for terrorist attacks in Transdniestria

TIRASPOL. Jan 12 (Interfax) - Moldova is preparing militant groups for attacks in Transdniestria, the State Security Ministry of the unrecognized Transdniestrian Republic said.

"Special militant groups (more than 60 people, mainly those who arrived from Ukraine and have combat experience) are now being trained on the premises of special units of Moldova's defense and security agencies under the command of foreign specialists. The training is being conducted to carry out terrorist attacks on the territory of the Transdniestrian Republic aimed at destroying critical infrastructure facilities, sabotage at military facilities, seizure or killing of the republic's top officials and heads of defense and security agencies," a statement published on the ministry's website on Friday said.

The Transdniestrian ministry is not giving any details.

The State Security Ministry said at the start of this week that "an incident in which firearms were used and after which two Transdniestrian citizens were moved to the territory of Ukraine occurred near the Transdniestrian-Ukrainian border" on January 7. Moldovan and Ukrainian law enforcement agencies did not confirm that information and no other details were given.

The Transdniestrian administration has imposed a high "yellow" level of terrorist threat in the region since spring 2022. Transdniestria leader Vadim Krasnoselsky prolonged it again on Friday by 60 days until March 14 inclusive.

The first round of talks on Transdniestrian settlement in the 1+1 format to be held in 2024 will take place next week.
