HELSINKI. Jan 15 (Interfax) - The Finnish government will ensure the security of its border with Russia "in all cases," Finnish Prime Minister Petteri Orpo said.
"The situation was acute. Now the borders will remain closed, but influence activities through illegal land border crossings continue. The government will ensure border security in all cases," Orpo said at a meeting of the council of the largest, ruling National Coalition Party on Saturday, as quoted by Yle.
"We will take additional measures if necessary. We will not be helpless," Orpo said.
"We will use every available legal instrument and are ready to look into laws," he said.
Border security is good and all is quiet for now, Orpo said.
"There is physical surveillance, a fence has been built in critical areas, and more can be done when the spring comes," he said.
The Finnish government decided on December 11, 2023 to keep all passenger checkpoints on the country's eastern border closed until February 11, in view of the mass influx of migrants from third countries to the Finnish border allegedly organized by Russia.
Only the Vainikkala border station, which handles rail cargo traffic between Finland and Russia, will remain operational.
