NATO secretary general sees Ukraine support as investment in West's security

DAVOS. Jan 16 (Interfax) - Support for Ukraine must continue, this is not charity but an investment in Western countries' security, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said.

"We have to support them [Ukraine] and I am confident that NATO allies will continue to provide support because support for Ukraine is not charity, support for Ukraine is investment in our own security," Stoltenberg said at a forum in Davos on Tuesday.

Trying to predict the direction in which the conflict will evolve is futile, he said.

"I am very careful about predicting [...] how the war will develop. Wars are by nature unpredictable," Stoltenberg said.

Ukraine wants to be part of the West, of the European Union, NATO, and the country is now closer to this more than ever, he said.

Earlier on Tuesday, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said the EU must continue to support Ukraine.

"Ukrainians need predictable financing [...]. They need a sustained supply of weapons," von der Leyen said.
