MOSCOW. Jan 17 (Interfax) - A Moscow justice of the peace has imposed a revenue-based fine on Amazon Web Services for working in Russia without opening a branch or a representative office, the court told Interfax.
"An administrative fine of 200,469,997 rubles and 13 kopecks has been imposed on Amazon Web Services Inc.," Acting Justice of the Peace from Judicial District No. 422 in Moscow's Tagansky District Alexandra Mikhaleva said in her ruling.
The company was found guilty of failing to fulfill the legal duties of foreign entities operating online on Russian territory.
Such an offense committed by legal entities is penalized with a fine of 1/15 to 1/10 of the overall revenue from the sale of all goods (work, services) in the calendar year preceding the year of the administrative offense but no less than six million rubles.
According to the administrative offense motion, the company has been operating in Russia without opening a branch or a representative office, and has ignored corresponding warnings from the Federal Service for Supervision of Communications, Information Technology and Mass Media.
Amazon Web Services, a subsidiary of the Amazon corporation, is one of the world's most popular cloud platforms.
